How Does It Work? In Colorado, divorce is known as “dissolution of marriage.” We start by meeting individually with each potential client to conduct an in-depth assessment of his or her unique situation. During this meeting, our skilled attorneys quickly identify the issues that are likely to figure prominently in the dissolution case and carefully explain the process of dissolution in Colorado. Procedurally, the process of dissolution typically involves the following steps:
- Dissolution Petition Filed by One or Both Parties
- Petition Filed and Served Upon Opposing Party
- Deadlines for Exchange of Discovery and Financials
- Establishment of Temporary Financial and Parental Responsibilities
- Settlement Negotiations or Alternate Dispute Resolution
- Division of Marital Assets and Debts Between Parties
- Final Allocation of Parental Responsibilities and Support
Once all the issues above have been addressed, the Court enters a Decree of Dissolution. By law, a Decree of Dissolution cannot be entered by the Court until at least 90 days have passed since service upon the opposing party. In many cases, a final Decree is not entered until several months after the case begins, particularly in cases where parties are unable to reach an agreement on the issues and the case must be tried before the Court.
“Darin provided me with excellent counsel while I went through a difficult divorce last year. He was likable, knowledgeable and fair. I believe he truly cared about my situation. Most importantly, he helped negotiate a fair resolution in a very short amount of time. Would I refer a friend to Darin? The answer is YES.”
